Jeffrey Bergen, as a young man, was put in a position to heroically save a life. It was on an Open Center rafting trip in Alaska in 1984. We spent most days going down two rushing rivers on the rafts, but one day we were set free to climb and scamper over the glassy glaciers. Jeffrey was with Walter Beebe‘s oldest son, John, who was 18 years old at the time and a big athletic guy. So off they went to explore the glacier, out of sight of everyone else. They came upon a glacial pool … slick sides, just about wide enough to fit a man. John stripped naked and jumped in. And then he couldn’t get out. Jeffrey could only hold John up from the waist and yell for help. As the minutes went by, John became closer to hypothermia. Imagine Jeffrey’s panic … but with all his strength he continued to hold John up until finally someone up high on the glacier heard the rising sound and ran to gather help. In those minutes Jeffrey alone made all the difference in the life of John Beebe and all the Beebe family. Forever grateful.
